January 2, 1939 Mildred Burke comes to Birmingham
Birmingham, Alabama: January 2, 1939: Mildred Burke
(Ladies World Champion) beat Alice St. Clair... Leo Jenson beat Charlie Keene (dq)... Art O’Mahoney beat George Bennett... Earl Malone beat Sid Bromberg
Pro wrestling was quite prevalent in Birmingham in the 1940's and along the way I'll be posting results from that era. Several major names including the world champion(s) during that area made regular visits to the Steel City. I'm not yet sure who all the promoters were during that era but I am continuing to do research for the upcoming book on southern pro wrestling which I hope to release in the coming months.
I have produced two Karl Stern Classic Wrestling Audio Shows for Wrestling Observer this week and the first one is now up for free. So go to WrestlingObserver.com or check iTunes.

Some southern wrestling news
There is a Wrestle Birmingham show in Graysville, AL tonight at the Civic Center. I think this is the first Wrestle Birmingham show in quite a while. Their website is plugging a big show at Boutwell in November and if it's anything like their previous Boutwell shows then make plans now to attend because it will be a can't miss show for anyone who loved old school southern wrestling. The biggest classic wrestling name on tonight's show is Mike Jackson.
I continue work on my book about southern professional wrestling which will likely be published by FigureFourOnline.com / WrestlingObserver.com and I hope to have the first draft ready by mid-August.
I'll continue to post results, title histories, interviews, and more here on at least a daily basis and I haven't heard back yet from Amazon.com about including this blog for subscription on the Amazon Kindle
but it usually takes a few days.

The History of the (Alabama) Southern tag team titles
Several promotions, including Florida and Memphis, had versions of the "Southern tag team title". What many people don't know is that Alabama also had a version of the Southern tag team championship which was active for a ten year span in the 1950's-60's.

The History of the Gulf Coast title
The Fields brothers promoted Gulf Coast Wrestling before Ron Fuller purchased the promotion and changed it to Southeastern Championship Wrestling (and later Continental). The Fuller's and Fields are related by marriage. This is the history of the Gulf Coast heavyweight title.
